www.dcnr.state.pa.us

Most people often mistake advertising and public relations to be the same. Yes it is true that they go hand-in-hand. However, their goals and focus are very different.

Every advertising campaign has to go through a certain process. Think of it as a check and balance system where the client will give a basic concept to the agency and then let them think of creative ways on how to run with it. Though there are some clients that leave everything to the agency, some would like to get involved and micromanage every detail. If you have an advertising job, do not hesitate to contribute, as your ideas might be put to good use.

Another misconception that you might have heard is that advertising is fun-filled and all about being glamorous, which is not true at all! Do not believe everything that you see on TV where the people working in advertising just seem to have fun all day and do little or no work at all. Yes, creativity may be fun. However, the work involved is not just sitting around all day talking and drinking coffee.

If you are ambitious though, you can make a lot of money in advertising. But just like any other profession, you need to work your way going up.

Role of Advertising

www.filter.ac.uk

Today, the role of advertising is defined as the art of creating and positioning brands, and then persuading the consumers to buy them using messages in mass media. Mass media will include radio, print ads, or television. You may probably think of advertising agencies as idea stores where everything you buy is influenced by their suggestions. Like for example the food you eat, the car you drive, and the clothes you wear most probably were patronized because you saw it somewhere as a form of media communication. And that influenced you to purchase those products. It is definitely a fun and creative field that is unique in the business world.

An adequate covering letter will make the CV impressive. A covering letter will allow you to pick out and choose the best of your CV and then bring them to the attention of the prospective employer immediately before they have the chance to peer deeply into it. This way, any relevant past work experience or skills that appeal to the company will shine out right away among the other less applicable qualifications that you might possess. However, before you write your covering letter, make sure that you are fully aware of the details of the job that you are applying for.

It should not be underestimated whether you have just graduated from a university or you have been in advertising for decades now and your heart is already set on a shiny executive office.

For example, if you are one of over one hundred candidates that are applying for a post in a particular company, it’s your CV that will make the first impression. Make sure that your CV is tailor-fit to the job that you are applying for and it is not longer than is necessary.

The basic requirement for an advertising career is a bachelor’s degree. A degree in journalism or advertising is a great idea for you if you want to become an advertising manager. Your studies should include courses in visual arts, communications methods and technology, sales, market research, consumer behavior, and of course marketing. For executive positions, a master’s degree in business administration may be required.

An executive position in an advertising agency includes a Media Director who will work with other departments to select the communication media to advertise. These may be billboards, the Internet, magazines, newspapers, television, and radio. They also need to figure out the circulation costs with the ultimate goal of minimizing media cost.
