But the truth is there are a lot of opportunities for those who want to start in the advertising field provided that they are willing to work very hard for it. Your first advertising job may involve a lot of learning and a lot of legwork, but as long as you are serious with your career, you will have no problems.
There are a lot of misconceptions that clouds the advertising industry. For example, you might have heard that the advertising agencies are usually run by stodgy old men that are only trying to make a buck. This is not true, in fact, these agencies are run by ambitious entrepreneurs that have a goal to make something exciting rather than just make a profit.

Some also thinks that an advertising job is dishonorable and unethical. This isn’t true. Working in advertising is a much esteemed profession. Just because you are trying to persuade people to patronize a certain product does not mean that they are tricking or deceiving everyone. In fact, the last thing that they want is to produce deceptive materials that would harm a client’s reputation.

In advertising, whether you are keen to make a step upwards on the career ladder or desperate to find a new place of work, finding a job can be a struggle uphill. Besides, not only will you think about the advertising agency that will best suit your work ethic, but you will likely need to consider the possibility of relocating to another town or even another country. If you have a family, this could start a domestic problem. Of course you also have to think of a very important factor – your salary. Are you really looking for a big pay rise in your new advertising job? Or would you just settle for a small salary in order to have a position that will make you happy?

While the potential of the human mind is theoretically limitless, there will be times when you feel drained and burned out, and in a sort of mental block – unable to generate any good ideas. To help you out, here a few things that might help refresh your gray matter:

1. A GOOD night’s sleep.
The recommended sleep is about 8-10 hours, but we realize that advertising is a dynamic business, you might not always get the hours you need. Just make sure that you get some rest in between your work so you brain has a chance to refresh itself.

2. A glass of water.
Not getting enough fluids slows down blood flow, making your brain function at a less than optimum rate. Don’t wait until you are thirsty, and drink the recommended 8 glasses of water a day.

3. Expose yourself to new ideas.
Keep up with the times and explore whats in NOW.

From the eyes, ears and even taste, they all have to be satisfied for an ad campaign to be successful. You can have all the best photographers and graphics artists producing the best pictures money can buy, but without proper presentation, it’s merely still a picture. A successful ad artist conducting a campaign takes into account visibility, the ability to attract attention and instill interest and then come up with a tag line that says it all.
Think Nike with “Just Do It”, and you’ll get an idea of a successful ad campaign. Those three words along with seemingly bland photos combined by an artist produces music selling products with just three words. Or the Coke bottle with lettering in flowing ribbon style, now that’s advertising!

The people who manage and coordinate accounts are called Advertising Account Executives. They maintain the client’s account and assess their need to handle ad campaigns and advertising. These advertising executives have a variety of duties depending on the kind of organization that they work for. However, they also need to know the basics of public relations, promotions, and marketing.

Advertising Managers oversee promotion staffs as well as plan and prepare promotional materials to increase the sales of products and services. These managers will identify and develop contacts for promotional campaigns targeting buyers, and they prepare budgets as well as estimate costs of the campaigns.

Most people often mistake advertising and public relations to be the same. Yes it is true that they go hand-in-hand. However, their goals and focus are very different.

Every advertising campaign has to go through a certain process. Think of it as a check and balance system where the client will give a basic concept to the agency and then let them think of creative ways on how to run with it. Though there are some clients that leave everything to the agency, some would like to get involved and micromanage every detail. If you have an advertising job, do not hesitate to contribute, as your ideas might be put to good use.

Another misconception that you might have heard is that advertising is fun-filled and all about being glamorous, which is not true at all! Do not believe everything that you see on TV where the people working in advertising just seem to have fun all day and do little or no work at all. Yes, creativity may be fun. However, the work involved is not just sitting around all day talking and drinking coffee.

If you are ambitious though, you can make a lot of money in advertising. But just like any other profession, you need to work your way going up.

Today, the role of advertising is defined as the art of creating and positioning brands, and then persuading the consumers to buy them using messages in mass media. Mass media will include radio, print ads, or television. You may probably think of advertising agencies as idea stores where everything you buy is influenced by their suggestions. Like for example the food you eat, the car you drive, and the clothes you wear most probably were patronized because you saw it somewhere as a form of media communication. And that influenced you to purchase those products. It is definitely a fun and creative field that is unique in the business world.
